How to Detect Sewer Problems
Common Sewer Line Problems
Slow draining water, complete clogs, black or grey water backing up into your home are all easy to spot sewer problems. Dark water can be extremely hazardous to your health and it’s considered an emergency.
One of the biggest problems with sewer pipes is tree roots. Roots can force their way into the sewer lines, especially older clay and galvanized piping. This can cause full or partial blockages that can slow the water or completely prevent it from draining.
The most common sewer line blockages we see are because of:
- Tree roots in the sewer line
- Objects in the line blockage
- Broken pipes
- Flushing personal hygiene products, wipes, and luxury toilet papers
- Grease build-up blockage
- Pipe corrosion
- Leaking joints
- Bellied pipes
How Does Sewer Rodding Work
Power Rodding | Elk Grove Village, IL
Steel rod cables are chained together to create a long snake that fits into the plumbing line. The plumber carefully guides the sewer rod into the drain. Depending on the location of the drain the rodding could be isolated to a sink or if it’s a toilet the rodding might need to go all the way to through the main sewer line. The rod breaks up and knocks any debris out of the way. Rodding works on blockages small and large but Hydro-Jetting is better for soft clogs (often caused by soft bathroom tissues and disposable wipes).
Replacing The Sewer Line
Sewer Digging Repairs
If power rodding and hydro-jetting doesn’t fix the problem, the last resort is to dig and replace the sewer line. First, we send in a high definition camera to inspect the sewer line. Next, we slowly push the camera through the sewer looking for objects, cracks, tree roots, and other problems. Then, we pinpoint the exact location of the pipe and we formulate a dig plan. Knowing where to dig saves time and minimizes landscaping damage and costs. Sometimes we don’t have to dig at all. Each situation is different and we go by what the camera tells us.
Sewer Line Inspections
For New Home Buyers & Real Estate Pros
If you’re buying a house, you could consider taking the home inspection a step further by getting a camera inspection of the sewer from a licensed plumber. For a few hundred dollars one of our accredited plumbers will come out, run a full camera inspection, and provide the video on a flash drive or via email. As a buyer, this can give you peace of mind and as a seller, it can be used as an assurance that the plumbing system has a clean bill of health. We commonly work with real estate agents, buyers, and sellers. Contact us anytime online to schedule service or call us now to get your sewer line inspected.
How To Prevent Sewer Line Clogs
Tree Roots, Grease & Hygiene Products Don’t Mix Well
First and foremost, do not use flush anything labeled as a “flushable wipe.” Personal hygiene products, diapers, and flushable wipes are almost guaranteed to clog your sewer system if you flush them. If you have an older home, we recommended ditching the luxurious toilet paper brands and going back to two-ply. Avoid planting any large trees near water sewage lines. If you do, just make sure that they are slow-growing and shallow-rooted. Never pour any grease, fats, or oils into any of your drains, it can lead to disastrous clogs.
Avoid plumbing shops selling a chemical or natural drain cleaning alternatives. The theory is that microbes will eat the grease in the pipe but our experience is that it rarely works. You can think of it as literally pouring money down the drain.
